Planning Commission Approves Towing Company Safety Fence Waiver – The Oxford Eagle


The Oxford Planning Commission has approved a waiver for Chandler Towing, LLC as long as the lot is being used as a pound yard.

The towing and roadside assistance company requested a waiver for extending the fence and barbed wire to complete an enclosure on its expanded land. There is already a fence and barbed wire on the property as well as a private, green screen, but the owner of Chandler Towing wants to complete the barrier and keep the company from being liable.

Chandler Towing has an active contract with the Oxford Police Department and insurance that requires the type of fencing requested.

Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen has attached a letter of support to the request stating that Chandler Towing is a licensed company that requires them to have a safety wire placed on their fence to protect seized property by the OPD. The lot contains only OPD cars.

Since the lot contains police evidence, it is frequently visited by officers and investigators, with the party seeking evidence relating to a case.

“Chandler Towing has been an approved towing company for several years and was recently recognized as one of two City of Oxford approved towing companies,” McCutchen said in the letter. “While we understand why these requirements were adopted, we believe that Mr. Chandler addresses a unique need. “

According to Chandler Towing’s Larry Chandler, anyone is likely to have an accident in town or be pulled over, leaving a car in their parking lot for an extended period of time.

Oxford Senior Planner Robert Baxter pointed out that the Planning Commission had rejected a waiver request to use barbed wire atop a previously approved six-foot fence to protect an unfenced parking lot in October 2020 for a property across from Chandler Towing on the west side of Rickey D Boulevard Britt Sr.

The Planning Commission said construction of the previously approved six-foot fence should be attempted first, and then in the event of a trespass and theft, barbed wire should be considered. The commission was reluctant to approve the current waiver request since the barrier is based on the contract with the OPD and no incident has occurred on the Chandler Towing grounds.

However, Chandler wanted to completely avoid any initial mishaps since the contract is in place and would like to keep Chandler Towing’s file clean.

The commission proposed to approve the exemption for barbed wire on the condition that the wire is moved after the lot is no longer a pound yard. The six foot fence was also approved by the commission with staff terms that the fence must be constructed from chain links coated with black vinyl and must include privacy slats.
