JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – Owners of a Jacksonville towing company that was used by local law enforcement were arrested Monday and charged with fraud.

Gregory Gaylord, 64, and Garrison Gaylord, 29, owners of Southern Tow Truck and Recoverywere arrested for fraud organized by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office following an investigation into overcharging customers and patrons.

JSO and the Florida Highway Patrol had used the company in their call rotation to tow vehicles involved in crashes. Both agencies have stopped working with the company.

“Being on this list for your local and state, departments like JSO and FHP, is a highly coveted list,” said News4JAX crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson.

In a warning letter to Southern Wrecker & Recovery in 2020 obtained by News4JAX, FHP listed several instances in which people were charged for unauthorized charges and warned that if this continued, the company would be removed from rotation. from FHP.

According to the letter, the towing company overcharged FHP 18 times from July 2020 to October 2020.

The Gaylords were released after posting $75,000 bonds.
