DETROIT (AP) – Two Detroit cops have been charged with accepting bribes to break the rules and direct cars to a privileged towing company.
An indictment was unsealed in federal court. The charges are the latest in a federal investigation into Detroit’s towing proceedings.
Lt. John Kennedy is accused of accepting over $ 14,000 in cash, cars and car repairs from a tow company and an undercover federal agent. Kennedy was supposed to be investigating the business.
Kennedy and Officer Daniel Vickers have been charged with corruption and conspiracy.
They asked for court-appointed lawyers.
Vickers said, “I didn’t do that.”
Chief James White made the following statement about the matter:
We anticipated this outcome and will continue to cooperate with the FBI in their investigation, which began before I headed this department. I am deeply disappointed with the crimes allegedly committed by these officers. We will continue to root out corruption and restore confidence in the towing process. The ministry has already implemented sweeping changes, and more are on the way. Our community deserves honest actors and police excellence. We are committed to being fully transparent throughout this process.
